Jean Muir was part of the British design revolution of the 1960s. Jean Muir’s look was based on signature fabrics, colours, details as well as precision cut and fit.  Fabric, texture and strict attention to detail were of paramount importance. Garments were designed to skim and flatter the body with movement, and Jean Muir collections gained dedicated followers the world over.  Her work has graced the wardrobes of celebrities including Lauren Bacall, Joanna Lumley, Barbra Streisand, Judi Dench and Diana Rigg.

Jean Elizabeth Muir was born in London in 1928, and brought up in Bedford.
She first worked in the stockroom of Liberty's, then graduated to selling over the counter, before being given the opportunity to sketch in the ready-to-wear department, despite having no formal art college training. From Liberty’s, Ms Muir moved to Jaeger, where she worked as a designer for six years. In 1962 she moved to the Jane & Jane label, and in 1965 won an Ambassador Award for Achievement for one of her independent collections. In the following year, when Jane & Jane's parent company was taken over by Courtaulds, Ms Muir and her husband Harry Leuckert (whom she had married in 1955) decided to start their own company, Jean Muir Ltd.
